Alan Shields
1944 - 2005
• Shields was born in Herington, a town in North Central Kansas, with a population of 2,526. He was active as an artist in New York City.
• Many of Shields’s images incorporate mathematical concepts.
• Shields used sewing to create three-dimensional paintings and incorporated handmade paper into his prints and book art.
• Before becoming an artist, Shields studied civil engineering at Kansas State University from 1963 to 1966.
