Anthony Caro

Anthony Caro

1924 - 2013

Sir Anthony Alfred Caro After studying Engineering at Cambridge University (1942-5), Caro trained in sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools (1947-52) and as an assistant to Henry Moore (1951-3). As a teacher at St Martin's School of Art (1952-79) he made a significant contribution to sculpture, encouraging a new enquiring approach. Following his solo show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1963, Caro's work, often using steel, became publically recognised. He was knighted in 1987. ' A gantry, machinery, industrial chains, oxy-acetylene cylinders, and men busy welding: it must be the studio of the artist who has remained a more innovative sculptor than any other for half a century.
