David Edwin Bernard

1913 - 2006

David E. Bernard was born in Sandwich, IL. He lived and worked in Wichita, KS. He received his BFA in 1939 from the University of Illinois and his MFA in 1949 from the University of Iowa, where he studied with Mauricio Lasansky. He came to Wichita in the 1940's. He was a Professor at Wichita State University where he developed the Printmaking program there in 1949. He taught at WSU for over 30 years, retiring in 1983. He was the co-founder of the Index Gallery in 1958 along with Paul Edwards, Rex Hall, Robert Kiskadden and Enrique Riveron. His work includes: woodcuts, engraving, etching, dry point, mezzotint, aquatint, lithography and calligraphy. He was also a sculptor. His work ranges from straightforward realism to geometric abstraction. He was selected as Kansas Governor's Artist Award, 1982. His work can be found in the collections of: Library of Congress, Pennell Collection at the University of Kansas, New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, NE, Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, Wichita Art Museum. David passed away in 2006 in St. Cloud, FL.
