Francesco Albani

Francesco Albani

1578 - 1660

Born on 17 August 1578 in Bologna where he studied under Denis Calvaert before entering the Carracci Academy c.1595. He worked in Rome 1602-16 and 1623-5 and in Mantua 1621-2, but spent most of his life in Bologna. His later works were principally mythological scenes for private patrons; Lanzi hinted that the twelve children of his second marriage furnished models for the amorini, and stated that Albani made repetitions and 'practised his pupils in them, giving them his own touches'.
