George Henry

1858 - 1943

Born in Ayrshire. Worked as a clerk in Glasgow, studing at the School of Art circa 1881-3. Joined Guthrie, Walton and Crawhall at Brig o'Turk in the Trossachs 1881. Painted with Guthrie, Walton, Melville and others at Cockburnspath 1884. Began friendship with Hornel at Kirkcudbright 1885; later they collaborated on two oils 'The Druids' (1890) and 'The Star in the East' (1891). Henry and Hornel visited Japan 1893-4. Elected ARSA 1892, RSA 1900, ARA 1907 and RA 1920. Settled in London and became a successful portrait painter.
