Hedi Bak

1927 - 2010

Known for her strength and dry wit, Hedi (Hedwig) Bak endured many challenges in her life. As an artist, her career spanned sixty years and three continents. Bak was born in Pirmasens, Germany, the daughter of a political activist who was to spend a year in Dachau in the early 1930s. Growing up during the rise of Fascism and World War II profoundly influenced Bak’s commitment to art. A prolific printmaker, painter and educator, Bak was tasked with printing the first edition of prints from the newly rediscovered illustration blocks of the Luther Bible by the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, Germany.
