Robert Sudlow

1920 - 2010

• Sudlow has been called the “Monet of the Flint Hills” because of his impressionistic style and many plein air paintings (paintings made outdoors) of the region.

• The artist originally wanted to be a scientific illustrator. To earn money as a student at the University of Kansas, he drew reptile specimens at the Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum.

• During World War II, Sudlow served as a naval pilot in the Western Pacific and painted watercolors of swamps, beaches, and airfields.

• Sudlow taught painting at the University of Kansas from 1947 to 1987.
