A Blindfolded Man

Edward Gordon Craig was the son of Ellen Terry, the Victorian actress, and architect Edward William Godwin. He started his career in the theatre by working with his mother and the actor-manager Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre in London. He quickly discovered an interest in theatre design and went on to become a ground-breaking theatre designer and director. The exact subject and date of this watercolour painting are unknown but it shows Craig's radical approach to costume design which moved away from Victorian realism and minute attention to detail, to something more fluid and symbolic.
