Angels with the Sudarium (Vera Icon)

Two angels are presenting the Vera Icon, the “true face of Christ” on the Veil of Saint Veronica, above a landscape of lakes, castle ruins, cliffs, and forests. Such landscapes were rare at that time, but Huber has engaged with this theme as a setting for a biblical scene. The result is a “world landscape”—a construct of the imagination that was a symbol of the universe, after the example of Netherlandish art. The two angels, on the other hand, were inspired by a Dürer engraving of 1513. The Saint Anne’s altarpiece in the parish church of Huber’s native town Feldkirch was the artist’s masterpiece. The following image shows the entire altarpiece.
