Male Portrait in Profile

This painting represents a male bust in profile, smartly dressed with red cloth and a hat, into a marble frame perspectively rendered.

The green and heavy curtains are moved away and a characteristic port landscape is shown to the viewer.

The painting strikes for its deep attention to details, for dazzling colours obtained thanks to shining lacquer and for the accuracy of the technique On the windowsill in the foreground, painted with a ‘trompe-oeil’ effect, there is a prayer book with a ring and a pearl. These two jewels allude to marriage and suggest that the panel could have been the right part of a matrimonial diptych.
