Woman with a Cat

Unknown Artist

During the rule of the Zand and Qajar dynasties in Iran (1750-1925), artists created paintings that combined both Persian and Western sensibilities. From Europe came the tradition of large-scale oil painting, while the subject matter of youthful beauty, patterned textiles, and court life was quintessentially Persian. Many of these works were arched at the top because they were originally intended for display in arched niches of buildings.
