Altarpiece (retablo) with Scenes from the Passion

Forming the left side of a large fixed altar are scenes representing the events preceding the Crucifixion of Jesus. From left to right, they are: the Agony in the Garden, the Betrayal, Christ before Caiaphas, Christ Crowned with Thorns, the Flagellation, and Christ before Pilate. In medallions are heads of apostles with scrolls inscribed (in Latin) with the opening phrases of the Apostles' Creed, a statement that summarizes Christian belief (I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth / And in Jesus Christ, his only son, Our Lord / Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary / [of the father] almighty, from there he will come to judge the living and the ...
