Boating Party on a River

Jan van Goyen made hundreds of chalk sketches from nature in his travels around the Netherlands. This river scene may have been first drawn in chalk with brown and possibly gray washes; the uncharacteristic colored washes are a later addition. The scenery is modeled on the village of Leiderdorp, situated on the Oude Rijn near Leiden. Its inhabitants add a lively touch to this otherwise spare sheet.
