Cartoon of the Bank of England gatekeepers

Some of the cartoons in our collection were made by people who worked at the Bank of England. Danny Denahy is one of these artistic employees. He worked as a gatekeeper from 1952 to 1992.

This cartoon shows scenes from his work as a gatekeeper. Gatekeepers kept watch at the Bank’s entrance, greeted visitors to the Bank, and made announcements about changes to the Bank’s interest rates. The Head Gatekeeper wore a red robe over his distinctive pink tailcoat.

Denahy drew cartoons for the staff magazine, the Old Lady, and produced designs for Bank of England Christmas cards.
