Bust of a Nymph
Cordier is perhaps best known for his polychrome sculptures and busts of North African men and women which were much admired in the mid-nineteenth century. Queen Victoria bought two of his African busts at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, and Cordier’s patrons in France included Napoleon III and the Empress Eugènie. This bust, one of a pair in the Wallace Collection, may have been included in a sale of Cordier’s works at Foster’s in Pall Mall, London, in May 1861.
