Cleish Castle Ceiling Panel (5 of 9)

Paolozzi made nine panels, commissioned by architect Michael Spens (1939-2014), for Cleish Castle, near Kinross. These were subsequently removed and eventually installed in ceiling of the Dean Gallery (now Modern Two) on its opening in 1999. Here they are supplemented with three extra casts. The panels were originally shown in a double-height space with three related tapestries. Based on a 1927 German illustration depicting organ music, the design of the reliefs marks an important phase of abstraction in the artist's work.
