Courtyard, Algiers

Leighton made this sketch of a courtyard in Algiers in May 1895, less than a year before his death. On the advice of his doctor, Leighton travelled to north Africa in the hope that the warmer climate would improve his health, leaving his duties at the Royal Academy to John Everett Millais. Leighton had previously visited Algiers in 1857, on his first trip outside of Europe. In his own words, ‘this visit made a deep impression on me; I have loved ‘The East’ as it is called, ever since.’
