Cromwell at prayer in his tent

This romanticised 19th century painting depicts Cromwell reading the Bible in his tent before battle, conveying the importance of his faith to him. He underwent a religious awakening in the 1630s whilst living in St Ives and became a devout Puritan.

Despite strong personal beliefs, Cromwell advocated a measure of religious toleration as Lord Protector for Nonconformists and the re-admission of Jews to England.
