Cross Dressing - Cret de la Predrix

This work was made when Woffenden was living in South East France in a regional park area called the Pilat, where the crucifix in many forms and materials - concrete, iron and wood - is a feature on hills and by roadsides. She became interested in placing work in and exploring the genius loci of a landscape. In her work Woffenden questions the value systems in society, the feeling of being out of tune or overpowered, in this case thinking about the gendered symbolism of the cross and ideas within Christianity and its repercussions. A dress feminises the symbolism and because it’s a bridal dress it also submits to that religious idea.
