Jade is a very hard stone, meaning it cannot be carved, instead it is abraded using a bow drill and grinding plate. The jade-workers of the Mughal Empire, particularly in present day India and Pakistan, were renowned for their skill in working nephrite jade, and embellished objects with precious stones to further enhance the beauty of the dense opalescent material. This object may have served as a decanter. Baron Edmond had a collection of Mughal objects, which he displayed in his tiled orientalist Smoking Room in his Parisian town house.
