The globe, made for Duke Friedrich III's cabinet of curiosities at Gottorp, is mechanically powered and shows the universe according to the ideas of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, with the sun at its centre and the planets orbiting it. After the Great Nordic War, the globe came to the Royal Chamber of Art in Copenhagen as war booty. When, in the late 1800s, there was a danger that it would be sold abroad, brewer J. C. Jacobsen chose to acquire it for the museum.
