The Humanist Jacob Ziegler

Jacob Ziegler amassed a wealth of experience and learning during his life. A theologian, mathematician, astronomer, and geographer, he was one of the most influential humanists of his day. Ziegler and like-minded scholars were vocal in their criticism of the Church’s omnipotence, thus paving the way to the Reformation. Instead of religion prohibiting freedom of thought, this worldview placed humanity at its heart, as rational individuals capable of improving their lives through education. For this strictly frontal portrait of the scholar in a black cassock, Huber drew inspiration from commemorative images from Ancient Rome. Compare the Roman grave relief shown here on your app.
