Dutch Milkmaid

This painting by Anton Mauve (1838-1888) was bequeathed to Marion Sambourne in 1906 by an old friend, Charles Hartree. She was delighted with this 'lovely picture' and even more pleased when she had it valued and discovered that it was worth more than any of the paintings owned by her husband Linley. Mauve was a Dutch artist, a leading member of the Hague school of painting, whose idyllic country scenes were very popular both in Europe and America. He was married to a cousin of Van Gogh and was an important influence on that artist.
