Epitaph of Hanns Rechwein von Honigsdorf

The Renaissance is known for the many innovations in art. Through the rediscovery of ancient Roman ruins, architecture, in particular, provided impetus for change. In Austria, this sculptor drew inspiration from Italy. He placed his figures in an early-modern frame composed of arches and horizontal stone beams. This monument commemorating the knight Hanns Rechwein von Honigsdorf and his wife is from St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, where wall paintings belonging to the ensemble were uncovered in 2016. These are of superb quality and have been attributed to an artist from Dürer’s closest circle. A projected image reunites the stone sculpture and the painted “wings.”
