Ravine in the Uttewalder Grund in Saxon Switzerland

Heinrich did not paint the Uttewalder Grund on location in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains but, as was then usual, in his studio based on drawings he had made on walks with detailed references about the colors. Caspar David Friedrich appreciated Heinrich’s picture, although the two artists’ approach to landscape could not have been more different: symbolic exaltation of nature on the one hand, realistic rendering of the visible world on the other. The sky is blue with light cloud. Spring sunlight shines into the Uttewalder Grund, illuminating sections of rock and highlighting the path leading out of the ravine....
