This enamel portrait miniature shows Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild at the age of about 30. He had yet to commence on his ambitious project to build Waddesdon Manor, which began with his purchase of the land in 1874. Born in Paris, raised in Frankfurt and Vienna, Ferdinand settled permanently in England in 1859. He married his cousin Evelina in 1865 but she died in childbirth the following year.
