For Meditation

Stone, to Karl Prantl, was a fact of nature, and the artist remained faithful to his chosen material throughout his life. Beginning in the 1950s, he spearheaded a renewal of stone sculpture by developing a spare formal vocabulary that won him acclaim in Austria and abroad. Smoothly polished surfaces, exposed veins, incisions and indentations are characteristic features of his abstract monolithic creations. Their harmonious form flows from an encompassing vision that lends his works a spiritual aura. As the title suggests, Prantl’s sculptures invite the beholders to immerse themselves in the encounter with the stone in order to feel its meditative power....
