G F Watts in Bed

Mary first met G F Watts at his studio in Little Holland House in 1870 while she was studying art in London. Following this initial meeting, G F Watts acted as a mentor and inspiration for Mary. Inspired by his democratic philosophy on the power of art, she would often show him her work and seek advice. It was not until 1886 that the couple married.

This watercolour study of G F Watts seated in bed provides an informal view of Mary’s artist-husband. This domestic image contrasts the more formal portraits that depict G F Watts as an established artist.
