Garden from the Past

Garden From the Past explores the idea that the ceramic object is part of a wider network of human interaction and trace. During the making of the work I consider the journey of ancient ceramic artefacts that have influenced me, and in particular I respond to how an object fragments and picks up traces of erosion and wear throughout its life-span. Influenced by architecture and the grid systems used in the excavation of archaeological sites, I draw upon ideas explored in Rosalind Krauss’ writing on Grids. The sense of manmade control provided by the grid is juxtaposed in the work with the use of less predictable reductive processes that mimic natural weathering. These two elements come together in an exploration of shadow and light as well as positive and negative space; gently encouraging the viewer to consider the artwork in connection to the world beyond the gallery walls and the ground beneath us.
