Tissot: George, 1st Earl Macartney

Born at Lissanoure, County Antrim, Earl Macartney (1737-1806) was a diplomat and statesman. He served as governor of Madras (now known as Chennai) in India from 1781 to 1785, and led a trade mission to China in 1792. Dressed formally, as he would appear at Court, Macartney wears the Polish Order of the White Eagle, an honorary decoration.
