George III Mahogany Four-Poster State Bedstead

The George III four-poster bed is of Hepplewhite design.

The canopy, curtains and valance are decorated with floral garlands and exotic animals or mythical birds. All of the decoration was stitched by Charlotte de la Tremouille. Charlotte was the Countess of Derby and mother of Lady Amelia, who was married to the 1st Marquis of Atholl.

As great ladies did in those days, she soothed her nerves by embroidering the decorations when her home Lathom House in Lancashire was under siege during the Civil War between 1644-45.
