Good Afternoon

Alex Katz is an American figurative artist who is known for his crisp large-scale paintings of simplified portraits and landscapes. They are defined by flatness of surface, swaths of bright color, and the presentation of ordinary, lived moments. Katz's style presents a distinctive type of Realism in American art, combining aspects of both abstraction and representation. Katz often uses friends and family as models, and Good Afternoon portrays his wife and muse, Ada, in a canoe. Ada has been the subject of more than 250 of his paintings.
