Guy Stevens was a decade older than The Clash. Expelled from school as a teenager, he became an avid collector of blues and R&B records, mostly US imports, which he picked up around Liverpool Street while working for an insurance broker. From 1963 Stevens ran a weekly R&B Disc Night at the Scene Club, a mod hangout in Soho, which drew in bands like The Who, The Small Faces, The Rolling Stones and The Animals.

Stevens put together reissues and compilations of American records and wrote for Record Mirror. In 1964 he was asked to run the UK branch of the Sue record label, an offshoot of Island Records. Stevens brought out R&B singles and released four volumes of the compilation album The Sue Story. In the mid-1960s Stevens moved away from R&B and started producing.

Joe had a cassette tape with songs released on the Sue record label.
