The cluster on this hair pin is formed from 'black dot' paste stones, a mark of English manufacture in glass and jewellery-making centres, such as Birmingham and Bristol. However, since all the tortoiseshell pins in Baroness Edmond's collection match, it is possible that she had them mounted as a group in France, using earlier clusters.
