Hayagriva with his consort Lakshmi

The horse-headed Hayagriva is considered as an important incarnation of Vishnu. Reputed to be the dispeller of darkness (tamas), he is associated with knowledge and wisdom. As Brahma started to create the universe, two demons Madhu and Kaitabha, stole away the Vedas. Vishnu manifested himself as Hayagriva and retrieved the Vedas.
