Prince Willem of Orange, later King Willem II of the Netherlands

After the final defeat of Napoloen Augustin enjoyed generous patronage not only from the restored Bourbons but from some of the many foreign visitors who flocked to Paris. The subject of this miniature ascended the Dutch throne in 1840 - at the posthulous sale of his art collection in 1850 the 4th Marquess of Hertford was one of the principal purchasers. The presence of this miniature in the Wallace Collection may, however, be explained by the sitter's military career. In 1811 he was aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington. He fought in the Peninsular war and at the Battle of Waterloo. The 4th Marquess of Hertford may well have known him....
