Kate Duncan Smith (5765)

Bust length, oil-on-canvas portrait of Kate Duncan Smith. This subject is seated and turned slightly right, facing forward. She has dark brown eyes and a slight smile. She wears a ruffled sheer white fichu or deep collar that completely covers her shoulders. Deep purple violets are pinned to the bust.

Provenance Narrative Kate Duncan was born in 1844 in Chambers County, Alabama. She married J. Morgan Smith in 1863, and spent her early married years in Talledega, Alabama. The Smiths moved to Birmingham in 1880, where she lived until her death. Kate Duncan Smith was elected State Regent of the Alabama Society of the DAR in 1897. She served as State Regent for ten years, then as Vice President General of the NSDAR for two years; she also served as Honorary Life Vice President General for twenty-three years. As State Regent, she was influential in the acquisition of the Alabama Room in Continental Hall. She was instrumental in selecting the site of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School and for its establishment. She died in 1934.
