Lafourche is one of the oldest parishes in South Louisiana, once named by early mapmaker settlers as “LaFourche Des Chitimachas”, Chitimacha is a native American tribe currently known for their river cane basketry. Later shorten to Lafourche, a distributary bayou used by the settlers as a way of communication, transportation and source for fresh water.
