The Polish Standard-Bearer: Paris 1814

A wounded officer of the Polish Lancers assisting the defence of Paris against the Allies in 1814 looks out over the city. Montmartre is on the left and the Madeleine and the Pantheon on the right. This is a version of an oil (Angers, Musée des Beaux-Arts) exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1831. See also Cogniet P685, the companion watercolour, with a complementary subject, showing a Polish officer in front of one of his own towns, set on fire during the Russo-Polish War of 1831.
