Love in a Puff
In this new work, Love in a Puff (2021), painted site-specifically for the House of St Barnabas, a lone male subject squats amongst the dense foliage that frequently populates the artists’ work. The figure is shown smoking, an activity considered symbolically masculine in China. Hung in the Soho Room, the work’s subject matter additionally alludes to the historical context of the House, the architecture and planning of which originally included a smoking room, decorated to male taste, to which gentlemen would retreat from their female
