When her husband, former General Dwight D. Eisenhower, was elected president in 1952, Mamie Geneva Doud Eisenhower brought her personal style and unique decorating skills to the White House. Her ebullient personality helped to popularize her signature short bangs and her favorite color, which soon became known as “Mamie Pink.” Not only did it feature prominently in her wardrobe, as seen in this portrait of Eisenhower in her inauguration gown, but also in much of the feminine décor that she introduced into the White House during her eight-year stay.
As first lady, Eisenhower received hundreds of letters a month, and she hired additional staff to ensure the correspondence was answered. Her welcoming attitude extended to the Easter Egg Roll, when she challenged the precedent and insisted that African American children be allowed to participate.
