Masterplan for Middlehaven

This model illustrates the master plan for Middlehaven, a 250-acre former industrial dockland located on the River Tees, designed by architect Will Alsop in 2004. It contains buildings and community facilities – for example a theatre in the shape of a toaster and offices inspired by the Rubik’s cube. Selected aspects of this proposal have been realised since its inception, including the Middlesbrough College. However, economic recession, among other factors, put an end to Alsop’s ambition to create a vibrant mixed-use waterfront destination.
