The Baltic German painter Eugen Dücker, born on Saaremaa, specialised in seascapes, such as the serene Seaside. In 1858, Dücker went to study at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, firstly sculpture and later landscape painting. In 1863, he travelled to Germany, spending a short time in Berlin, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe until he moved to Düsseldorf, where he spent six years on a stipend. From 1872, Dücker served as a professor at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts until his death in 1916.

Dücker favoured a realistic style of painting, both in his own work and in his teaching. Dücker painted bright, clearly structured coastal landscapes, and particularly views of the islands of Rügen and Saaremaa.
