The end of the 20th century saw an upsurge in woman-focused care. Midwifery adapted and in 2000 the first Midwifery-led unit (MLU) opened. Northern Ireland now has 9 free-standing or hospital-sited MLUs in operation. Midwives continue to combine the relationship skills of ‘being with woman’ alongside the technical skills required of a 21st century maternity service.
