Mortlake Tapestries (Set of Three)

The tapestries were woven at Mortlake on the Thames by Flemish weavers brought over from Flanders in 1619.

Oliver Cromwell seized the royal collections, including the tapestries, and ordered all the works to be sold at auction. In 1696, the agent of the Earl of Tullibardine (later 1st Duke of Atholl) acquired the tapestries in Paris.

The tapestries depict the Greek myth of Atalanta and Meleager’s love story, encompassing differing borders of interlaced floral garlands, swags of fruit, portrait medallions, animals and birds. In 2017 the tapestry in the Dressing Room travelled to Antwerp, where it was conserved and cleaned.
