The increasingly active role of women in European society is reflected indirectly in the themes of various works. Nicolas Andre´ Monsiau frequently treated the subject of a debate which Aspasia, Pericles’s second wife and an extremely clever and beautiful woman in Athens during the fifth century BC, had with the great philosopher Socrates in the presence of general Alcibiades.
