Kiki Kogelnik’s sizable and multifaceted oeuvre ranks among the most significant positions in Austrian art after 1945. Having started out in the young avant-garde around Galerie nächst St. Stephan in Vienna, Kogelnik moves to New York in 1962 and develops her own distinctive style of Pop Art. In the 1970s, the artist responds to the rise of second-wave feminism with a series of portraits of women in which she reflects on the prevalent beauty ideals of the period. “Now is the time” and other works depict female figures striking artificial and exaggerated mannequin poses; their mask-like faces make them seem interchangeable....
