Orange and Green Still Life

Mary Fedden painted still lifes throughout her career. She said of her pre-occupation with still life: “I come back from holiday with sketchbooks full of landscapes … and then I’m back to still life. It’s my real love”. Fedden’s still life paintings are not simply observational representations of what she see is in front of her – they could also be considered semi-abstracts in their exploration of colour and shapes. Fedden was very involved in London’s artistic circles at the time she painted this work. She was a tutor at the Royal College of Art between 1958 and 1964, where she taught artists such as David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield. She said later that Hockney had a tremendous influence on her work, it was “something to do with the excitement of painting, I think; he was very deeply thrilled with painting”.
