The Clash: London Calling - Pennie Smith

Pennie Smith first photographed The Clash at the Royal College of Art in London in November 1976 and continued to take photos of the band throughout their career. Smith accompanied the band on their Take The 5th tour of North America in September/October 1979. Her shot of Paul Simonon smashing his guitar at the New York Palladium on 20 September 1979 was used for the London Calling album cover. The cartoonist and illustrator Ray Lowry selected a further 53 photos to feature on the back of the cover and the two inner sleeves.
