Anna B. Leonard was president of the New York Society of Ceramic Arts and one of the founding editors of the influential periodical Keramic Studio. She also decorated pottery using a kiln she set up in her New York apartment. Leonard believed schematic designs that derived from nature, like the dogwood blossoms that encircle this plate, were appropriate for objects in modern households. Keramic Studio promoted such designs, illustrating botanical prints alongside various stylized patterns based upon them.
